What is a Went List?
A went list is a list of travel destinations that is ranked according to the ratings of people who have been to a particular destination and done a particular activity there. Common went lists are based on several people's average rating, and personal went lists are based on an individual's own ratings.
What is a Want List?
A want list is a list of travel destinations that people want to visit to do a particular activity. Common want lists are ranked according to the number of people who want to go there.
What are Highlights?
Highlights are specific qualities or characteristics of a destination related to a particular activity - in other words, what is it that makes this destination a good place to engage in this particular activity.
Highlights may be specific for a particular destination (Specific Highlights - e.g. Freeway Terrain Park), or they may apply more or less to all destinations within an activity (General Highlights - e.g. Snow Conditions).
What's with the Dice?
The dice are commonly used instead of star-ratings by and in Scandinavian magazines and newspapers, and we thought it would add a nice, original touch and feel to the site.
How Should I Interpret the Numbers on the Dice?
The following values provide a guideline to what the numbers on the dice mean:
The values can be seen when placing your pointer over a die in the rating forms.
How are the Aggregated Ratings Calculated?
Because you cannot compare normal averages calculated from groups of different sizes, we use something called a bayesian estimate. The procedure is a bit too complex to explain here, but it ensures that a destination with one score of 6 (normal average 6) does not rank higher than a destination with nine scores of 6 and one 5 (normal average 5.9).
Why can't I find my Favorite Activity?
Activities suggested by our members are added to the search lists as soon as a reasonable number of users have added destinations to those activities. In the meantime such an activity will have status "unlisted", which means that it is only visible from the suggester's own profile.
You may click here to suggest a new activity.
Why can't I find my Favorite Destination?
Destinations contributed by our members are added to the results lists as soon as they are checked and approved by Best Place Book. For the ranked lists to be meaningful, however, it is essential that all destinations that belong to the same activity are of the same type. For instance, a list ranking golf courses doesn't make much sense if it also contains the names of cities or states (even though these may be great golf destinations). To increase the chances of your contributed destination to be listed, it is recommended that you make sure it is as similar as possible in nature to the destinations that are already listed for that activity.
It is perfectly fine to add any other type of destination to your lists, however. Such destinations are called unlisted, and are visible from your profile and from the profile of any other member who chooses to add them to their lists. Note also that destinations added to unlisted activities will remain unlisted until the activity itself becomes listed.

What is a Business Member?
A Business Member is a member that uses his or her profile to promote destinations or travel related companies associated with particular destinations in which they have commercial interests. Best Place Book welcomes Business Members, but we think it is fair to let our readers know that such members' reviews may be biased. Members will be considered to be Business Members if they do one of the following: 1) Add a link to a website, Twitter-profile or Facebook-profile that promotes a particular destination or a particular travel product associated with a destination, 2) Claim "Travel Professional" expert status on a destination review, or 3) Use the Messages feature for any form of marketing communication. Best Place Book reserves the right to change a member's status to Business Member at our own discretion and without further notice.
What is an Expert?
An Expert is a person or organization that has a high degree of knowledge about a particular activity at a destination and agrees to being contacted to share this knowledge. Expertise can be based on this person or organization's status as a Local, Visitor or Travel Professional. A member can become an Expert of a particular destination by filling in the required information on the Experts tab of the Review form for that destination. Best Place Book will try to reward Experts by announcing their expertise in various communication channels.
